Safety tips
Straight from 25 years of hazmat response. General guidance only — always follow your agency's SOPs.
Know your zones
Establish hot, warm, and cold zones before entry. Decon lines belong in the warm zone, upwind and uphill of the release whenever the terrain allows.
Hydrate before you suit up
Encapsulating suits drive core temperature fast. Pre-hydrate 30-60 minutes before donning and rehydrate with electrolytes during rehab, not just water.
Buddy checks are non-negotiable
Every seal, glove ring, and SCBA connection gets a second set of eyes. Verbally confirm air pressure and exit time with your partner.
Rehab is part of the operation
Rotate crews on a clock, not on feel. Monitor vitals at rehab entry and exit, and hold anyone whose heart rate does not recover.
Base layers matter
Moisture-wicking, snug-fitting base layers reduce chafing under bunker gear and speed evaporative cooling during rehab.
Document the decon
Record the product, concentration, contact time, and runoff containment. Good documentation protects both the crew and the agency.
Chemical reactivity
Identify the product before you commit resources. Reactivity kills crews faster than the original release.
Water-reactive materials
Alkali metals, carbides, hydrides, and many chlorosilanes react violently with water — never default to a hose stream. Confirm the product first and use dry agent or blanketing as directed by the SDS.
Oxidizers plus fuels
Oxidizers do not need an outside ignition source to accelerate combustion. Keep them separated from flammable liquids, organics, greases, rags, and reducing agents at all times.
Acids plus bases
Neutralization is exothermic. Uncontrolled mixing generates heat, splatter, and pressure. Neutralize slowly, in dilute steps, downstream of containment.
Acids plus cyanides or sulfides
Produces hydrogen cyanide or hydrogen sulfide immediately. Treat any acid contact with these salts as an instant IDLH atmosphere and evacuate upwind.
Bleach plus ammonia or acid
Common in industrial and janitorial spaces — generates chloramine or chlorine gas. Ventilate, isolate, and do not attempt cleanup without respiratory protection.
Peroxide formers and shock-sensitive residues
Aged ethers, picric acid, and dried peroxides can detonate on friction or movement. Do not touch crystallized containers — call the bomb squad or a specialty contractor.
What not to do
- Do not apply water until the product is identified — some materials react, spread, or intensify.
- Do not enter a release to read a placard or label; use optics, binoculars, or reference sources from a distance.
- Do not mix decon runoff or waste streams; incompatible wastes react inside the drum.
- Do not rely on smell as a warning — H₂S deadens the sense of smell at dangerous concentrations.
- Do not skip continuous atmospheric monitoring because an early reading was clean.
- Do not doff PPE before technical decon is complete, even when you feel clean.
- Do not use latex or generic work gloves as chemical protection; match glove material to the permeation data.
- Do not freelance. Every task goes through the incident commander and the safety officer.
Compatibility & segregation
Storage and waste-stream segregation prevents the second incident. Verify against the SDS and your facility's compatibility chart.
Flammable liquids
Keep away from: Oxidizers, acids, ignition sources
Bond and ground during transfer; vapors travel along the ground.
Oxidizers
Keep away from: Flammables, organics, reducers, combustible packaging
Store on non-combustible shelving with separate secondary containment.
Acids
Keep away from: Bases, cyanides, sulfides, metals, oxidizers
Segregate nitric acid from all organic acids — it acts as an oxidizer.
Bases
Keep away from: Acids, aluminum, zinc, ammonium salts
Reaction with light metals releases hydrogen gas.
Water-reactives
Keep away from: Water, aqueous solutions, humid air
Store sealed, under inert oil or blanket gas per the SDS.
Biohazard / infectious waste
Keep away from: Chemical waste streams, sharps in soft bags
Red bag and rigid sharps containers only; never co-mingle with chemical waste.
Biohazard operations & keeping the gate
Assume the worst unknown
Treat unidentified biological material as an infectious agent until it is characterized. Bloodborne pathogen precautions are the floor, not the ceiling.
PPE for bio response
Fluid-resistant suit with taped seams, double nitrile gloves, eye and face protection, and at minimum an N95/P100 — powered air or SCBA when aerosolization is possible.
Control aerosols
No sweeping, no compressed air, no high-pressure water. Cover, absorb, and wet-wipe. Bag waste inside the hot zone before it moves.
Disinfection that actually works
Match the disinfectant and contact time to the organism — a 1:10 bleach solution needs real dwell time, and spores may require specialized agents.
Keep the gate
One controlled entry point, one exit through decon. An entry officer logs every name, time in, and air pressure. Nothing crosses the gate uncontrolled — people, tools, samples, or waste.
Medical surveillance
Document exposures immediately, initiate post-exposure protocols, and follow up with occupational health. Paperwork the same shift, not next week.
